The Durham District School Board is currently accepting applications for the trustee seat made vacant by the recent resignation of trustee Linda Stone.
At a meeting on April 15, trustees voted in favour of beginning an application process to fill Stone’s former seat. Other options to fill the seat included holding a byelection, with an expected cost of $1.15 million, or choosing one of the other candidates that ran for the seat in the last municipal election.

“Although I strongly support the democratic process of an election, but certainly when you consider the cost of $1.15 million to hold, it seems to be cost-prohibitive,” said trustee Deb Oldfield, declaring her support for the application process.
“This is economically responsible, it allows 2022 candidates who did run to apply, and it opens it up to anyone else who may not have been eligible at that time,” Oldfield added.
“It’s a process that’s open to all and allows the board to select a qualified candidate.”
In order to qualify, candidates must be legally able to vote, must be a resident within the jurisdiction of the DDSB and must not be otherwise disqualified under the terms of the Education Act.
